IELTS band score scale to measure English language proficiency. Each band corresponds to a level of English ability, from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user). You receive a score for each of the four modules Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking as well as an Overall Band Score, which is the average of the four.

How is the Overall Band Score Calculated?
Your overall score is the average of your four module scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5.
Example:
- Listening: 7.5
- Reading: 6.5
- Writing: 6.0
- Speaking: 7.0
- Average: 27 ÷ 4 = 6.75 → rounded to 7.0
Note: IELTS rounds to the nearest whole or half band. 6.25 rounds down to 6.0; 6.75 rounds up to 7.0.

IELTS Band Score for Pakistani Students: What’s Realistic?
Most Pakistani students taking IELTS for the first time without preparation score between Band 5.0 and 5.5. With focused preparation at a quality institute, reaching Band 6.5 to 7.0 in 8–12 weeks is achievable for most students.
Typical improvement timeline:
| Starting Level | Target Band | Preparation Time Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Band 4.5–5.0 | Band 6.0 | 12–16 weeks |
| Band 5.0–5.5 | Band 6.5 | 8–12 weeks |
| Band 5.5–6.0 | Band 7.0 | 6–10 weeks |
| Band 6.0+ | Band 7.5+ | 4–8 weeks (with targeted practice) |
Band Score Requirements by Module
Many universities and visa programmes do not just require an overall score — they require minimum scores in each module. This is especially common in:
- Healthcare professions (nursing, medicine, pharmacy)
- Teaching positions abroad
- UK visa applications
- Australian skilled migration
Example: Australian nursing registration (AHPRA) requires all four bands at 7.0 individually, not just overall.
This is why balanced preparation across all four modules is essential.
How to Move from Band 6 to Band 7
The jump from Band 6 to Band 7 is the most common goal for Pakistani students applying to study in Australia, UK, or Canada. Here is what separates a Band 6 from a Band 7 in each module:
Listening (6 → 7)
- Band 6 gets 23–26 correct answers out of 40
- Band 7 needs 30–31 correct answers
- Key improvement: Practise with multi-accent recordings. Work on section 3 and 4 (academic monologues).
Reading (6 → 7)
- Band 6: 23–26 correct answers out of 40
- Band 7: 30–31 correct answers
- Key improvement: Improve skimming and scanning speed. Practise True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings question types.
Writing (6 → 7)
- Band 6: Addresses the task but has errors; limited range of vocabulary and grammar
- Band 7: Covers all parts of the task; uses varied vocabulary and complex structures with good accuracy
- Key improvement: Practise Task 2 essay structure (4-paragraph model). Focus on formal vocabulary and complex sentences.
Speaking (6 → 7)
- Band 6: Speaks at length but may hesitate; vocabulary and grammar are adequate
- Band 7: Speaks fluently with natural hesitation; uses idiomatic language and a wide range of vocabulary
- Key improvement: Record yourself daily. Expand Part 3 answers with opinion + reason + example.

Q: What is a good IELTS score? Band 6.5 is generally considered a “good” score for most university and immigration purposes. Band 7 is considered strong. Band 7.5 and above is excellent and opens doors to the world’s top universities.
